This is a study of how the first Turbo Grand Prix car came to be a reality. From its earliest beginnings starting way back with a brief history of Renault, the development of Jean Redeles company, Alpine. The reasons for the first experimental car in 1968 that was so nearly raced in the French GP of that year but who’s development was stopped by Renault. The creation of a Turbo engine for the Alpine sports car that was to lead to the idea of a Grand Prix car powered by a Turbo charged 1500cc engine. The dedication of Grand Prix driver Jean Pierre Jabouille to develop the car on the track is graphically described and demonstrates the huge technical challenges that awaited the team. The book is stunningly illustrated and is completed by a full record of the developments and races during the Turbo era. With personal input from interviews with the men of the time. Transcript of first public test, Race reports on every race, over 200 photos and special illustrations.
Roy Smith has regularly written related Alpine Renault articles since 1989 for various magazines and is the UK correspondent for the major French Alpine Renault Magazine Mille Miles.  He began rallying Minis in the 1960s, retired and in the 1980s won 5 sprint championships in saloons and single seaters in the 1990s including the Paul Matty Classic Hill Climb championship with an Alpine A110 in 1997.

Subtitled 'The Development of the Revolutionary Turbo F1 Car 1968 to 1979' (deep breath), Smith's hardback does what it says on the cover: it's essentially a technical treatise intervened by lots of color photography. One for engineers more than race fans, although the cars' race histories are properly documented, too.

"... a book no fan of The Regie should be without." – Vintage Racecar

"If you are an avid follower if this period, and of the Renault and Alpine partnership that introduced turbos to F1, you'll be delighted with this book. Photographically, the behind-the-scenes stuff and technical details are the work's biggest strength ..." – Motor Sport

This is a must-have for students of Formula 1, French race cars, Alpine, Gordini and Renault. A huge gap, filled." – velocetoday.com
