A Doll's House

Written in 1879, A Doll’s House has been called the first truly feminist play. A scathing critique of the traditional roles of men and women in nineteenth century marriage, it caused scandal throughout Europe at a time when marriage was regarded as the most sacred of society’s institutions. In Britain this uproar led to it being banned under the 1737 Licensing Act.
