Changes to regulations for sports car racing in the late 1970s paved the way for a golden era of endurance racing in the 80s, with the likes of Porsche, Lancia, Jaguar and Mercedes all vying for the World Sportscar Championship. The Silverstone 6-Hour and 1000km races became a cornerstone of this championship and the event was often used by the teams as a warm-up to the all important Le Mans 24-Hour race, which followed it on the calendar. This book charts the progress of the races, year-by-year from 1976, through the era of the Group C cars, up to the end of the eighties, with previously unpublished accounts and photographs of each event
Chas Parker is a motorsport writer who started his working life in the field of astronomy, as press officer for the Royal Greenwich Observatory. During this time he obtained a degree in mathematics and physics from the Open University. He has contributed to the Philips Encyclopaedia of Astronomy and Patrick Moore’s Yearbook of Astronomy. His main interest, however, is motor racing, and he spent many years taking photographs at different racing circuits around the UK, amassing a collection of many thousands of color transparencies. For some time he has worked as a sub-editor for Motorsport News, and he also reports on events such as the Goodwood Revival meeting and Festival of Speed. Endurance Racing at Silverstone in the 70s & 80s is his fourth book.
"It spans the glory days of BMW 'Batmobiles' and Porsche 935s to the awesome grids of Group C. It's written by Chas Parker, who took nearly all of the great photographs, too." – Classic & Sports Car
"Another in Veloce's prolific 'Those were the days …' series, this is almost like reminiscing about a bunch of great races with a mate. Rather than being a professional journalist, Parker's an enthusiastic knowledgeable amateur and a pretty good photographer. Both of these characteristics show through in the book." – Thoroughbred and Classic Car Owners Club
