The light and airy qualities of watercolor lend it to creating luminous portraits that are full of life. In Watercolor Made Easy: Portraits, award-winning artist Peggi Habets invites artists to learn the secrets of rendering beautiful, lifelike portraits using this sometimes tricky medium. Techniques specific to painting lifelike portraits and detailed information on tools and materials are included. A variety of diverse and contemporary subjects appeal to a wide variety of tastes and artistic styles in this educational and approachable book. |
Peggi Habets is an award-winning watercolor and oil portrait artist. Her studio is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but she works with clients around the country. Her life-long interest in art and a 15-year career in graphic design and illustration have led to her career as a portrait painter. She was nominated as Pittsburgh Center for the Arts "Emerging Artist of the Year 2008," and her work has been included in "Best of America: Watercolor Artists," Watercolor Magic magazine, Palette magazine, and the Portrait Society of America's The Art of The Portrait magazine. Most recently, her painting "The Forest for The Trees" won Best of Show at the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh exhibition at Fallingwater. |

When I tell people that I paint portraits in watercolor, the most common reply is, “I wouldn’t try that; watercolor is too difficult.” My answer to them is, “Watercolor is as hard or as easy as you make it.” Every medium has its strengths and drawbacks. Watercolor, for example, is fluid and spontaneous. If your goal is to make a watercolor that looks like other traditional portrait media (oils or pastels, for example), your attempts will lead to frustration. However, if you allow the active and sometimes unpredictable nature of watercolor to work its magic, it can lead to some surprising and interesting effects. Along with showing you how to use these effects to your advantage, this book will arm you with the tools you need to create a well designed, expressive watercolor portrait. I hope this book will give you the confidence to try something new and encourage you to continue practicing long after you have finished these nine projects. |
