Art Lab for Kids
52 Creative Adventures in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Paper, and Mixed Media-For Budding Artists of All Ages
"Art Lab for Kids would make a wonderful addition to any home or classroom with elementary age children and up. Many of the projects lend themselves to teenagers, as well... which means it's a perfect book for families with mixed aged kids looking for a book to bridge the years! It's divided into drawing, painting, paper, collage and mixed media and I can't wait to dive in more deeply. The printmaking chapter might be first!" - MayaMade Blog
"You know I'm always on the hunt for fun ways to keep my kids' creative juices flowing, so when I came across this new book, Art Lab For Kids, I perked right up. It features 52 fine art projects for kids in mediums like painting, drawing, printmaking, and mixed media. Each lesson is inspired by the work of a different contemporary artist!" - Gabrielle Blair, Babble.com
"Art Lab For Kids is a wonderful new book by my friend Susan Schwake, the mastermind behind artstream studios. It's a source of ideas and lessons for creating all manner of different art with children... mind you I learnt a couple of new things from it too. The book is lovely, meaty and inspiring." - Flossy P., flossy-p.blogspot.com
"When I ordered Drawing Lab, Amazon suggested I might also like Art Lab for Kids by Susan Schwake. The Lab series of books all present 52 "labs" or lessons in the chosen subject matter, so if you chose, you could proceed through the book using one lesson per week. The Units in this book are Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Paper, and Mixed Media. Theoretically, you could start anywhere. Pick and choose what interests you and your kids the most. But if you're looking for a book to lead a group, or to build a homeschool art plan around, or to get started with family art making (like I wanted to do), this would be a great guidebook. Although the title says "kids" right in it, the activities look interesting and inspiring to me, too." - Amy Hood

"The book has a lab featuring a different art technique for each week of the year, covering: drawing, painting, printmaking, paper art, and mixed media. Some of the ideas you might have heard of, but there are many new-to-me ideas (gelatin printing, contact paper insects, fingertip painting...). I am sure you will be seeing more of our experiments from this book on the blog." - Amy Bowers
"A refreshing source of ideas for creating fine art with children, Art Lab for Kids encourages the artist's own voice, marks, and style. This fun and creative book features 52 fine art projects set into weekly lessons, beginning with drawing, moving through painting and printmaking, and then building to paper collage and mixed media. Each lesson features and relates to the work and style of a contemporary artist. Lisa Congdon, Megan Bogonovich, and Amy Rice are just a few of the artists included. The labs can be used as singular projects or to build up to a year of hand-on fine art experiences." - Barb Webb
"I was given the opportunity to review a copy of Art Lab for Kids book & have been using it as a resource for art time. There are so many things in this book that I would never think to do with our art supplies. Bug even enjoys art time more that there are new ways for her to create. She's very artistic, but was starting to get bored of art time." - www.tutusandteaparties.blogspot.com
"Written by a couple who run a successful combination art gallery and art school for children, this book presents the authors’ most popular art projects for youngsters, covering an ambitious range of materials and techniques. This guide offers a greater-than-average number of open-ended and inventive projects that can be taught to younger children and teens alike. Each project is paired with an example of a work by a modern master or living artist. Many photographs illustrate techniques and show children deeply engaged in creativity. VERDICT: Recommended particularly for teachers and parents." - Library Journal
"I love Susan's Art Lab series and reference them in the Art Studio often. They're easy to follow, full of images, and directed at open-ended exploration - exactly the kind of reference I need for my own busy home." - Meghan Burch, Art Studio Educator, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, MA
