Since 2006 the RAF has provided major air support in southern Afghanistan to help with reconstruction and to support the authority of the Afghan government. Its personnel and aircraft have been very heavily involved in everything from tactical reconnaissance and close air-support to in-theatre airlift and air-refueling. Author Antony Loveless presents the personal stories of a complete cross-section of the RAF’s personnel deployed on the frontline in Afghanistan - from the Air Commander in overall charge on the airside, down through his section commanders, to the pilots, engineers, loadmasters and all those on the ground who make it happen.

Antony Loveless is a freelance journalist and photographer. His work has appeared in The Guardian, BBC, Zoo, Sky News, Real, Bizarre, Royal Air Force Magazine, Defence Helicopter, Airliner World, Pilot, Skydiving and Despatches. He is also a regular contributor to two news agencies on a range of issues. In January 2004 Antony was appointed as Baghdad Bureau Chief for the London Press Service, a position he held until the hand over of power to the Iraqis in June. Antony has flown with the RAF, sailed beneath the Atlantic in a Royal Navy nuclear submarine and spent a week shadowing the City of London Police’s firearms team on operations.
